General Guidelines for
Library Assistants Attending
NISD After Duty Hours Staff
Development
I. STAFF DEVELOPMENT WHICH REQUIRES
COMPENSATION
The Library Assistants (LA) may attend staff development sessions and the campus MUST compensate the assistant for his/her time if:
1. The training is directly related to the job
responsibilities of the instructional assistant;
2. The LA has been asked by the librarian or administrator to attend;
3. Attendance has been approved by the principal.
A. If the training occurs during
the school year and causes the LA to work beyond 40 hours during the week, the
assistant must be compensated the equivalent of time-and-a-half.
B. If the training occurs
during the summer when the assistant is not currently working at the campus,
the assistant should be paid a supplement (using a Request for Pay form and sending it to Library Services)
commensurate with similar compensations, e.g. a minimum hourly wage.
II. ALTERNATIVES WHICH WOULD NOT REQUIRE
COMPENSATION
A. The LA may attend staff development
sessions provided during the school-year work-week for one hour per week before
and after school. This is allowable
since the LA's normal duty week is actually one hour and 15 minutes less than a
40-hour week, unless they also attend staff meetings or assigned other duties
totaling 40 hours. The training could be
provided by the librarian, other librarians, other proficient campus staff
members, or district staff, if arranged.
B. The LA may attend staff development sessions if:
1. The training is not directly related to the job
requirements of the LA;
2. The LA has not been asked or
required to attend by the librarian or administrator;
3. The assistant wishes to
attend the training on his/her own initiative and the following conditions are
met and understood:
a) There will be NO
compensation for his/her time
b) Attendance is on a
space-available basis in the training sessions
c) The Auxiliary/Classified Staff
Development Approval Form for Optional Training (Administrator
Regulation TEC 030) has been signed and brought to the session.
III. DURING DUTY HOURS (EARLY RELEASE DAYS)
WHICH WOULD NOT
REQUIRE COMPENSATION
A. Library assistants may
attend staff development sessions offered by Library Services, librarians, or
CITs on elementary and middle school Early Release days from
B. Librarian/Principal should
work out a rotation schedule for LAs to attend training, preventing all
instructional assistants being gone on the same days.
C. The training track could
consist of various SIRSI trainings, Internet search strategies, Online Database
Searching, and other related library technologies.
